בשערי הסטודיו של גיל ארד ביד השמונה, הזמן מאט את קצבו. כבר ברגע הראשון עולה תחושה ברורה של מסע לאחור, אל עולם שבו חומר, יד ומחשבה נפגשים בקצב אחר. זהו עולם של עצים יפים, כלים עתיקים ויצירות שנושאות עמן סיפור, עומק ותוכן. הביקור בסטודיו אינו רק מפגש עם נגרות עילית, אלא חוויה של תרבות, הקשבה וחיבור לשורשים.
גיל עובד רק בכלים ידניים, וללא שימוש במכונות, מה שהופך את בית המלאכה שלו לייחודי בארץ.
גיל ארד, יליד 1982, הוא נגר אומן ובונה כלי מיתר, מהחלוצים של זרם הנגרות המסורתית בישראל ומייסד בית הספר “ידנות”.
לפני מספר שנים עצר והשתתף בתערוכה ” נגר אומן” אשר העניקה חשיפה רחבה לעולם העץ המסורתי, ושפת הנגרות כיצירה אומנותית.
עבודתו נעה על התפר שבין רהיט לכלי נגינה, ובין דיוק הנדסי לרגש חי ונושם. כל יצירה היוצאת מידיו מתחילה בשרטוט, אך לא
פחות מכך במחשבה ובתכנון של סיפור. זהו תהליך שבו הרהיט או הכלי אינם רק אובייקט, אלא ישות בעלת אופי ונוכחות.
את התשוקה לעץ גילה בגיל צעיר, דרך מפגש כמעט מקרי עם החומר. שיטוטים בין פחי אשפה של נגריות הפכו עבורו לאוצר של ממש. חתיכות עץ שנזרקו הפכו לקופסאות, מקטרות וחפצים קטנים, ובעיקר לשער לעולם שלם. כבר אז הבין שהעץ הוא חומר חי, כזה שממשיך לזוז ולהשתנות גם לאחר העיבוד. מכאן נולדה תפיסת עולם מקצועית עמוקה: תפקידו של הנגר אינו לכפות צורה על החומר, אלא להכיר אותו, להבין את תנועתו וליצור עמו בדיאלוג.
עוד בתחילת דרכו קיבל על עצמו שתי החלטות עקרוניות שהפכו לאבני יסוד. עבודה בעץ מלא בלבד, ללא דיקטים או תחליפים מודרניים, ושימוש במחברי עץ בלבד, ללא ברגים ומסמרים. עבור גיל, האתגר האמיתי והמרתק טמון בתכנון רהיט שמחזיק מעמד לדורות, מאפשר לעץ להתרחב ולהתכווץ לפי עונות השנה, ועדיין שומר על יציבות ויופי. זוהי חידה מתמשכת שממשיכה להעסיק ולהסב לו סיפוק עמוק.
בשנים האחרונות העמיק עוד יותר את הקשר למלאכה הידנית, והחליט לוותר לחלוטין על מכונות,
הבחירה בעבודה ידנית טהורה נבעה מתשוקה לסביבה שקטה ונקייה, מאבק ורעש מכונות.
אך בעיקר מתוך רצון עמוק לצלול לעומק המלאכה .
הבחירה הזאת אינה נוסטלגית בלבד אלה עמדה אומנותית שמבקשת להאט, להעמיק ולכבד את היצירה .
השראה משמעותית מגיעה מהנגרות היפנית, והסקנדינבית מלאכה של זן, דיוק וכבוד עמוק לחומר ולתהליך. רבים מהכלים שבהם הוא משתמש הם כלים יפניים, הבנויים ופועלים אחרת מן הכלים המערביים, ומזמינים עבודה קשובה, איטית ומדויקת.
גיל יוצר רהיטים שנולדים מתוך דיאלוג עמוק עם העץ, עם הזמן ועם הזיכרון. עבודתו שואבת השראה מאמנים יפנים וסקנדינבים, אך מתורגמת לשפה אישית, שקטה ושורשית, כזו שמכבדת את חומר הגלם ואת סיפורו.
תהליך היצירה של גיל מתקיים בשני מישורים. האחד הוא עבודה בהזמנה אישית, לעיתים בנוכחות הלקוח, כחלק ממפגש חי בין חלום, צורך וחומר. השני הוא יצירה חופשית, מונעת מוזה. לא פעם הרעיון נולד מניצוץ קטן, חתיכת עץ שמבקשת להפוך לרהיט, כאילו הייעוד שלה כבר טמון בה.
עיקרון מרכזי בעבודתו הוא השארת נגיעות לא מטופלות ברהיט. זהו פיצ׳ר מודע, שמחזיר את הצופה למקור, ליער, לשורש. התחושה אינה של מוצר מוגמר בלבד, אלא של המשך חיים של חומר טבעי שנגעו בו בידיים מכבדות.
בימים אלו עובד גיל על שולחן יפני המשלב גינת זן מרהיבה. זהו רהיט בעל משמעות אישית עמוקה, שכן לפני כעשרים ותשע שנים היה זה הרהיט הראשון שבנה, אז ללא ידע מקצועי. כיום הוא שב אליו, משחזר ובונה אותו מחדש, באותו רעיון וקונספט, אך עם הידע, הניסיון והדיוק שצבר לאורך השנים..

At the entrance to Gil Arad’s studio in Yad HaShmona, time seems to slow down. From the very first moment, there is a clear sensation of traveling back in time, into a world where material, hand and thought meet at a different rhythm. It is a world of beautiful woods, traditional tools and creations filled with story, depth and meaning. Visiting the studio is not merely an encounter with fine woodworking, but an experience of culture, attentiveness and a deep connection to roots.
Gil Arad, born in 1982, is a master woodworker and stringed instrument maker (luthier), one of the pioneers of traditional woodworking in Israel and the founder of the “Yadanut” school. His work moves along the seam between furniture and musical instruments, between function and art, and between technical precision and living emotion. Every piece that leaves his hands begins with a drawing, but no less with thought and the careful planning of a story. The furniture or instrument is not just an object, but a presence with character and soul.
His passion for wood began at a young age through an almost accidental, friendly encounter with the material. Wandering among discarded scraps behind carpentry workshops, he and a close friend found what felt like pure gold. Pieces of thrown away wood became boxes, pipes and small objects, and above all, a gateway into an entire world. Already then, Gil understood that wood is a living material, one that continues to move and change even after it has been worked. From this realization, a deep professional philosophy emerged. The carpenter’s role is not to impose form upon the material, but to get to know it, understand its movement and create in dialogue with it.
Early in his journey, he made two fundamental decisions that became cornerstones of his work. To work exclusively with solid wood, without plywood or modern substitutes, and to use only wooden joints, without screws or nails. For Gil, the true challenge lies in designing furniture that can last for generations, allowing the wood to expand and contract with the seasons while maintaining stability and beauty. It is an ongoing puzzle that continues to fascinate him and provide profound satisfaction.
After spending time in Canada, Gil returned to Israel and built a guitar. This process marked a turning point, when he realized that for him, the highest form of woodworking is the making of musical instruments. Furniture that produces sound. Over the years, without formal training but guided by many teachers along the way, he explored diverse fields of woodworking, always aspiring to work in traditional methods and to create unique, commissioned pieces built to endure.
A major source of inspiration for him is Japanese woodworking, a Zen like craft characterized by precision and deep respect for material and process. Many of the tools he uses are Japanese tools, designed and functioning differently from Western tools, inviting a slower, more attentive and exact way of working.
In 2011, Gil began teaching and developed the “Toolbox Course.” The idea was simple yet profound. Before building furniture, one should build the tools themselves. Through this process, students acquire not only technical skills but also a physical and sensory understanding of the craft. The course quickly gained popularity, and Gil found himself dividing his time between teaching and creating.
In recent years, he has undergone a deeper personal process of reconnecting with hand craftsmanship and ultimately chose to abandon machines entirely. His commitment to purely manual work was born from a desire for a quiet, clean workspace, but also from the wish to fully engage with the challenges of the craft. In his view, machine based work often sacrifices natural skills in favor of perceived efficiency. Handwork restores the senses to the center, sharpening touch, sight, movement and inner confidence.
Gil Arad’s vision is the preservation of an ancient craft filled with joy and creative vitality, a craft that engages all the senses and invites a life of depth and presence. Behind the working hands stands a personal story as well. Gil is married to Naama, his childhood love, and they have four children. For him, creation is not separate from life, but deeply rooted within it, just like the wood from which it is made.
